Smart Halloween Lighting: How to Create a Haunted House with Smart Home Devices

Halloween is one of my favorite excuses to use smart-home equipment for something completely unnecessary but genuinely fun.

A few color-changing bulbs, an outdoor smart plug, and a motion sensor can do considerably more than simply illuminate decorations. They can change the look of the house throughout the evening, turn decorations on automatically, and trigger lighting when someone approaches the front door.

Better yet, most of this equipment can go right back to normal smart-home duty on November 1.

Here’s how I would build a smart Halloween setup in 2026, from a simple front-door display to a motion-triggered system covering the house and yard.

Start With the Lighting

Lighting makes a bigger difference than almost any Halloween prop.

A normal porch light illuminates the decorations. A deep red or purple light coming through a window changes the appearance of the entire house.

Color smart bulbs are an easy place to start because you can use fixtures you already own. Put one in a porch fixture, another in a lamp near a front-facing window, and perhaps one in the entryway.

For indoor fixtures, Philips Hue White and Color Ambiance bulbs remain a strong choice if you already have Hue equipment. Hue is particularly useful when several lights need to work together as a scene.

For a less expensive setup, TP-Link Tapo color bulbs are worth considering, especially if you already have Kasa or Tapo devices around the house.

I prefer using several different colors rather than making every light the same. For example:

  • Porch: deep red
  • Front windows: purple
  • Entryway: dim orange
  • Side of the house: green

The separation makes the lighting look intentional and creates shadows that a single bright color tends to wash out.

One practical consideration is brightness. Halloween lighting usually looks better when it is relatively dim. A smart bulb running at full brightness can make a room look like it has a colored light bulb in it. Reduce the brightness and the same room starts producing much stronger shadows.

Build a Halloween Scene Instead of Controlling Each Light

Once you have several lights, create a dedicated Halloween scene in your smart-home platform.

I use Apple Home, so I would create a scene called something like Halloween or Haunted House and add all of the lights involved in the display.

For example, the scene could set:

Porch light: red at 35%
Living-room lamp: purple at 25%
Entryway: orange at 20%
Outdoor floodlight: green

Now the entire setup can be activated at once instead of adjusting four or five lights individually.

This is also useful after Halloween. You can leave your everyday scenes alone and simply disable or delete the Halloween scene when the decorations come down.

Smart Plugs Make Regular Decorations Smarter

Not every Halloween decoration needs to be a smart device.

In fact, one of the easiest ways to automate Halloween decorations is to connect ordinary lights or decorations to a smart plug.

A plug can control things such as:

  • String lights
  • Illuminated pumpkins
  • Window decorations
  • Some inflatables
  • Certain motorized decorations

For indoor decorations, a Kasa smart plug works well. I use Kasa plugs around my own house, and scheduling is one of the features that makes the most sense here.

Instead of remembering to turn everything on each afternoon, set the Halloween decorations to come on shortly before sunset and shut off later in the evening.

Outdoor equipment needs more attention.

Use a plug specifically rated for outdoor use. TP-Link’s newer Kasa KP401M outdoor smart plug, for example, carries an IP64 rating and supports Matter along with scheduling and group control. That makes it a better recommendation today than the older KP400.

Also check the power requirements of anything you connect. A smart plug should never be used to control equipment that exceeds the plug’s rated load, and indoor plugs shouldn’t be moved outside just because they’re under an overhang.

Use Outdoor Floodlights to Change the Whole House

If I were buying one type of lighting specifically for Halloween, I would probably choose outdoor color floodlights.

You don’t need many.

A floodlight positioned near the ground and pointed upward at the house can illuminate a surprisingly large section of siding. Place another beneath a tree and you get moving shadows whenever the branches move.

Try combinations such as:

Orange + purple: classic Halloween
Green + purple: more theatrical
Red: particularly effective around trees and entryways
Dim blue: useful for a colder, ghost-like appearance

Current Govee Outdoor Flood Lights are a good fit for this type of display. Govee now offers multiple outdoor floodlight models with RGB color effects, and its newer Triad model adds Matter support and more than 40 preset effects.

You don’t necessarily need the newest model just to decorate for Halloween. If you already own outdoor RGB floodlights, the positioning and color choices will usually make a larger visual difference than replacing them.

Add Motion Without Making the Automation Too Complicated

This is where a smart Halloween setup gets more interesting.

Place a motion sensor near the porch or entryway and use it as the trigger for a Halloween automation.

A simple version could work like this:

Motion detected → porch light turns red → entryway light turns purple.

After a few minutes, the lights return to their normal Halloween scene.

The Philips Hue Motion Sensor makes sense in an existing Hue setup. For a Matter-based home, the Aqara Motion and Light Sensor P2 is another interesting option. It uses Matter over Thread and can connect with platforms including Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home and SmartThings, although you’ll need the appropriate Matter controller and Thread border router.

I’d keep these automations relatively simple. The more devices and cloud services you string together, the more opportunities there are for a delay when a group of trick-or-treaters arrives.

A fast lighting change is often more effective than an elaborate sequence that triggers three seconds too late.

A Halloween Automation I Would Actually Use

Here’s a practical setup that doesn’t require turning your house into a theme park.

At sunset, activate the Halloween scene:

Front windows: purple
Porch: orange
Outdoor floodlights: green
Halloween decorations: on

Then create a second automation triggered by the porch motion sensor:

Motion detected: porch changes from orange to red.

After two minutes without motion:

Porch returns to orange.

That’s enough movement to make the house feel interactive while keeping the walkway illuminated.

You could also trigger a smart plug controlling an appropriate decoration, provided that decoration is designed to be switched on and off this way.

Be Careful With Fog Machines and Motorized Props

A smart plug cuts or supplies electrical power. That doesn’t necessarily replicate pressing the power or activation button on an appliance.

Before connecting a fog machine, animatronic decoration, heater, or other powered equipment to a smart plug, check its instructions. Make sure the manufacturer allows it to be controlled by switching mains power and confirm that its electrical load is within the plug’s rating.

Simple lighting is generally much easier to automate safely.

Don’t Forget the Walkway

Halloween lighting shouldn’t make it harder for people to get to your door.

Keep steps, extension cords and changes in elevation visible. If you’re using pathway lights, orange works particularly well because it fits the Halloween display while still identifying the route to the door.

Avoid rapid flashing directly along the walkway. Apart from being distracting, flashing effects can be a problem for people who are sensitive to them.

I’d reserve animated effects for the house, trees or other areas people aren’t walking through.

Extension cords, plugs, connectors and lighting used outside should also be suitable for outdoor use. Weather resistance varies considerably between products, so check the actual rating rather than assuming a device is weatherproof because it’s marketed for holiday lighting.

A Good Halloween Setup for Under $200

You don’t have to replace your existing lighting.

If I were starting with a fairly normal house and a budget of about $200, I’d spend the money roughly like this:

Two color smart bulbs: front windows or porch
Outdoor Matter smart plug: existing Halloween decorations
Outdoor RGB floodlights: illuminate the house or trees
Motion sensor: trigger the porch automation

If you already have smart bulbs or a motion sensor, put that money toward better outdoor lighting instead.

That’s also one advantage of building a Halloween display around regular smart-home equipment. The motion sensor can go back to controlling hallway lights in November. The outdoor plug can handle Christmas decorations a month later. The bulbs return to everyday lighting.

There isn’t much seasonal hardware sitting in a box for eleven months.

My Ideal Simple Setup

For a typical suburban house, keep it straightforward.

Put purple smart bulbs in two front-facing lamps. Use a pair of outdoor floodlights to wash the lower portion of the house in green. Keep the porch light orange at relatively low brightness.

Then put the decorations on an outdoor smart plug and have everything activate automatically around sunset.

Finally, use a motion sensor near the front entrance to change the porch from orange to red when someone approaches.

That’s enough automation to make the display react to visitors without creating a complicated system that needs troubleshooting on Halloween night.

Test everything a few days beforehand, especially motion detection. Walk up to the house from the sidewalk exactly as a trick-or-treater would and see when the sensor actually triggers.

If it fires when you’re already standing at the door, move the sensor or adjust its detection area.

What I’d Change for Halloween 2026

Smart-home compatibility has improved since we originally published this article in 2025.

Matter is much more useful for this kind of temporary setup because devices from different manufacturers can increasingly live inside the same smart-home platform. The Kasa KP401M outdoor plug and Aqara P2 sensor are examples of products that can participate in a Matter setup rather than requiring you to build the entire display around one manufacturer.

That doesn’t mean every Halloween device needs Matter. A Wi-Fi floodlight controlled through its own app is perfectly adequate if you only want it to follow a schedule.

I would prioritize reliable control, outdoor ratings and products you can use during the rest of the year over buying equipment specifically because it has the newest smart-home logo on the box.

Final Thoughts

Halloween is a surprisingly good use case for smart-home automation because lighting does most of the work.

You can start with two color bulbs and a smart plug, then add outdoor floodlights or a motion sensor if you want the house to react when people approach.

The setup doesn’t have to be elaborate. A few well-positioned lights at low brightness will usually look better than covering the house with dozens of unrelated effects.

And when Halloween is over, almost everything can go back to its regular job around the house.
